Browser the library caT
In October of 2010, the library adopted a small, ornery grey kitten from the White Settlement Animal Shelter. We were inspired by the story of Dewey Readmore Books, who was taken in by the Spencer Public Library in Iowa after he was abandoned in the book drop on a freezing January night in 1988. Over the nearly 20 years of his life, Dewey became a public fixture in the community, entertaining visitors with his antics and raising their spirits through the farm crisis of the 1980s.
In the same way, Browser has become our library's mascot. Despite the fact that one of his favorite activities is to pounce out the front doors whenever someone comes to visit, we know he loves his home here and all the love and attention he gets from his fans!
Some of Browser's favorite activities include napping in the staff's chairs (forcing them to sit elsewhere, of course), lounging across the computer keyboards when visitors are trying to get work done, and attending our GED classes twice a week (he's even earned his own honorary diploma!).
Every year the library sells a calendar full of Browser's pictures or creates some other fund raising event to help support the posh lifestyle of this precious kitten. As you can see, he's always a good sport and lets us pose him for a perfect shot. If you would like to make a donation to Browser, stop by the front desk today!
